Fighting Book Bans and Protecting Your Local Library!
When you can, keep it local!
A few months ago I started as a volunteer for the Redwood City Library Foundation (RCLF). It’s a non-profit that raises money for the Redwood City Library’s projects beyond the core mission of keeping the lights, the WiFI lit and books (and CDs) on the shelves. These projects include Traveling Storytime, the Makerspace (located in the main library at 1044 Middlefield Road), and the Career Online High School).
Well, here we are in October and I’m now a member of the RCLF’s board, in addition to helping out with the RCLF’s communications. It’s a great way for me to get involved locally and support public libraries. I didn’t grow up in Redwood City but libraries — a school’s or our town library — were important resources of adventure and empowerment. So I volunteer.
The biggest fund-raiser is our annual Upscale Pub Crawl in support of Banned Books week. This year’s it’s Oct. 9 from 5-9pm. Participating pubs and restaurants are offering discounted drinks and small-bite snacks. If you’re in the area and want to check out some of Redwood City’s finest pub faire and fight book bans, buy your tickets here.
